National Arbor Day is a celebration of nature, and an occasion to make sure that future generations enjoy the same natural beauty that we do. Trees are the primary focus of National Arbor Day, so celebrants are encouraged to plant new ones, and care for old ones.
In addition to the environmental benefits, planting trees on your own property is an excellent way to boost your home's curb appeal, which is one of your most important tasks when selling a house. Cities that prioritize urban forest management can become part of the Tree City USA program, and there are many beautiful Tree Cities to explore in our neck of the woods.
In order to earn the Tree City USA designation, a city needs a tree board/department, an ordinance for tree care, a well-funded community forestry program, and an Arbor Day celebration. Click on any Tree City name on our list to view homes and learn more.
Elkhart – Located 15 minutes from South Bend, Elkhart is a scenic city with wooded trails, quaint bridges, and an excellent environmental record. The city's Environmental Center offers a great mix of education and fun.
Goshen – Goshen is Elkhart's next-door neighbor, and is the smaller of the two cities. Despite the size difference, both cities demonstrate the same commitment to green living. Goshen is known as a very family-friendly city, and its Tree City status is a great example of why that's the case. It's also home to the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail, which is among the most popular in our area.
Middlebury – As a small town, Middlebury proves that communities of any size can earn the Tree City designation.
Mishawaka – A mid-sized city located on the St. Joseph River, Mishawaka offers both tree coverage and waterfront scenery. The city's utilities even get in on the act, with Mishawaka Utilities earning the "Tree Line USA" designation.
Nappanee – Nappanee is another favorite of families, because there's something for every member of the household to enjoy.
South Bend – A large, beautiful city, South Bend has more than earned its Tree City status. The city's Venues, Parks, and Arts Department works hard to ensure that the city stays beautiful, and all of that scenery is great for property values.
Wakarusa – It's only fitting that the home of the extremely popular Wakarusa Maple Syrup Festival has also earned Tree City status. Wakarusa is a small town that's big on natural beauty.
Buchanan – The winding St. Joseph River touches many communities on our list, and Buchanan is no exception. Thanks to a very healthy population of redbud trees, Buchanan is known as the Redbud City.
Dowagiac – A small city that's big on the arts, Dowagiac is home to a public art program with sculptures in many of the city's most beautiful locations. This is a community where nature and art go hand-in-hand.
Sturgis – The city of Sturgis is located in Michigan's River Country, so you'll have ample outdoor recreation options as you explore this Tree City. Thanks to a hydroelectric dam, the city relies largely on clean energy.
